Middle Infielder/Reliever Jake Mondragon Commits to Top Scholarship at NJC

Jake Mondragon made an immediate impact on the Reds when he transferred to Eaton as a sophomore, now just 27 months later, "Mondo" has secured his collegiate future, committing to a top scholarship at Northeastern Junior College (NJC) in Sterling. NJC won the 2013 league title, and won the regional championship over Lamar to improve to a record of 40-19, advancing just one stop short of the Junior College World Series.

As a sophomore, Mondo immediately filled into the role the Reds needed most, a top-level shortstop and leadoff hitter, after having graduated a 4-year starter at that position the previous spring. Mondo helped lead the Reds into the postseason for the 30th consecutive year, and then into the Elite Eight after two Regional wins. The Reds suffered a rare defeat in the 2nd round of the State Tournament, putting their backs to the wall as they faced Faith Christian, who had come into the tournament as the heavy favorite before they too lost in the 2nd round. Trailing by a run going into the bottom of the 7th inning, the Reds had to rally back to tie the game, and then had just the man they wanted at the plate with the game tied and the winning run on third base, as Mondo stepped up and slashed the first pitch he saw through the drawn-in infield to send the Reds to victory and their 20th straight Final Four. A leadoff hitter disciplined to take pitches and work counts, Mondo ignored his normal role when Coach Danley instructed him to simply hit the first pitch that he could square up low and hard, which is exactly what Mondo delivered.

Mondo played a pivotal role the following weekend in leading the Reds to 3 straight wins to wrap up the 2012 State Championship, the Reds' 10th all-time spring title. That summer, Mondo again was instrumental in leading the Reds to a Legion B State Championship. As a junior, Mondo easily moved over from shortstop to second base to make room for one of the Reds most heralded underclassmen in decades. Most State Champion shortstops wouldn't do that, at least not willingly, but Mondo always puts the team first, ahead of himself. The Reds then took a 23-0 record into the State Tournament and came up a win short of earning yet another state title, though the Reds responded to that defeat by rattling off 42 straight victories after moving up to Legion A Varsity and winning the Legion A Varsity State Championship with a perfect 42-0 record over Class 5A and Class 4A teams, with Mondo entering many key games in relief or as the closer with one of the great knuckle curveballs in the Reds' arsenal. This fall, Mondo played for the WYCO Braves all-star team and again combined his raw tools, baseball savvy, and poise under pressure to excel amongst college players and top all-star teams throughout the Southwest region.

Mondo will now head to NJC in Fall 2014. Mondo enters 2014 with a record of 127-15 in two spring/summer seasons as a Red, and will again be expected to help lead his team to greatness, both at Eaton, as well as at the next level.
